Frequently asked questions
How many litres of paint for a 10×12 ft room?
For a 10×12 ft room with 10 ft ceiling: gross wall area = 2 × (10+12) × 10 = 440 sq ft. After deducting one door (20 sq ft) and one window (15 sq ft) = 405 sq ft net. For 2 coats of emulsion at 140 sq ft/L with 15% wastage: (405 × 2 ÷ 140) × 1.15 ≈ 6.6 litres → buy 7 litres. Use this calculator for an exact figure based on your room dimensions.
How much wastage should I add for tiles?
8% for simple rectangular rooms with straight-lay. 10% for L-shaped rooms, rooms with cut corners, or standard diagonal patterns. 15% for complex layouts, large-format tiles (600×1200 mm+), or highly irregular rooms. Always order all tiles from the same batch (lot number) — colour variation between batches is common.
Does this include primer?
Primer is not automatically included. To calculate primer quantity, run the paint estimator a second time and select "Primer only" as the paint type (coverage ~160 sq ft/L). For new construction bare walls, calculate 1 coat of primer plus 2 coats of emulsion as two separate estimates. For repainting, primer is often optional unless the old surface is chalky or uneven.
How are 600×600 and 600×1200 tile boxes calculated?
600×600 mm: 4 tiles per box = ~11.1 sq ft per box. 600×1200 mm: 2 tiles per box = ~15.5 sq ft per box. 300×600 mm: 6 tiles per box = ~11.6 sq ft per box. These are standard Indian market assumptions. Always verify the exact tiles-per-box on the brand's carton label, as it varies by manufacturer and tile thickness.
Is ceiling area included in the paint estimate?
Not by default. Tick "Include ceiling" to add L × W sq ft to the paintable area. If you are using a separate ceiling white or different paint for the ceiling, run it as a second estimate using just the ceiling area (Length × Width) as your room dimensions with zero height — or simply enter the ceiling area as L=1, W=(L×W), H=1 and zero doors/windows.
Can I use this for bathroom wall tiles?
Yes — switch to the Tile tab and select "Wall" as the surface type. Enter the total wall area to be tiled (length × height of each tiled section). Use 10–15% wastage for bathroom walls to account for cuts around fixtures, pipes, and outlets. This calculator covers the full tiled area — subtract any large openings (windows, shower enclosure glass) manually before entering.
Why does paint coverage vary by type?
Coverage (sq ft/L/coat) varies by paint formulation. Emulsion: ~140 sq ft/L. Enamel: ~120 sq ft/L (higher solids, thicker film). Exterior paint: ~120 sq ft/L (weather-resistant formulation, applied thicker). Primer: ~160 sq ft/L (thinner, penetrating formula). These are averages for quality Indian brands. Deep or dark shades may need an extra coat regardless of coverage rating.
Paint coverage in India
Emulsion for interior walls typically covers 120–160 sq ft per litre per coat depending on surface porosity. Two coats are standard on new plaster; one coat may suffice on repaints with compatible primer. Ceiling area can be included separately in the tool.
Tile wastage
Use 8% for simple rectangular rooms, 10% for L-shaped layouts, and 15% for diagonal layouts or large-format tiles. Buy tiles from one batch/lot to avoid shade variation.
