Modern Iron door designs for main door of your home

An iron door, called loha darwaja (लोहे का दरवाज़ा) in Hindi, is a popular choice for a main door or a safety door because it is strong and can be made in almost any pattern. Styles range from plain single doors to scrolled, laser-cut and glass-and-grill designs. In practice, most doors sold as “iron” in India are fabricated from mild steel sections and sheet, and much of what is sold as “wrought iron” is decorative mild steel. That matters, because bare mild steel rusts: how long the door looks good depends mostly on its finish and how well it is looked after. This page shows design ideas, and below them you will find what to ask your fabricator.

Iron jali door design

A jali panel on an iron door lets in air and light while keeping some privacy, and a grill keeps the door secure when it is open for ventilation. Cut-out patterns can be laser-cut or CNC-cut from sheet, or built from bars and scrollwork. Match the pattern to the style of the house: scrolls and curves suit a traditional home, and straight lines and simple geometry suit a modern one. For wooden jali, see our guide to jali door designs. Simple iron door design photos

A simple iron door, with a plain panel or a few bars and one clean pattern, is a classic choice. It is easy to fabricate and easy to repaint, and there is less scrollwork for water to collect in. Ornate scrollwork looks rich but traps water and dust, so it needs more attention to keep rust away.

A single iron door gives a strong, secure look and can be fabricated to suit a traditional or a modern front. Before you order, ask the fabricator about these points:

  • Material. Is it mild steel, galvanised steel or stainless steel? Stainless steel resists rust without a coating but costs more, and the grade matters in humid or coastal air.
  • Rust protection. A good finish is built in layers: surface preparation, a primer, then the colour coat. Galvanising or a powder-coat finish over good preparation lasts longer than ordinary paint on bare steel.
  • Where rust starts. Rust usually begins at the bottom edge where water collects, at welds and joints, and inside hollow sections that were not sealed. Ask how these are protected.
  • Frame, hinges and weight. Iron doors are heavy. The frame, hinges and wall fixing must be strong enough, or the door will sag.
  • Lock and safety. Ask about the lock points and how the door looks and works when it is shut and when it is open for ventilation.

Looking after it: check the door regularly, touch up chips as soon as you see them, because rust spreads under paint, and repaint before the old paint cracks and peels. Humid, rainy and coastal places are hardest on the finish. No iron door lasts forever without upkeep.
